Sound therapy or sound bath is a relaxation and meditative experience whereby participants ‘bathe’ in the sound waves produced by the human voice as well as instruments such as Tibetan singing bowls, chimes, drums, gongs and other native instruments.
The object of sound therapy is to return that which is out of balance in its frequencies to its optimum rate.
Sound is a natural expression of the self. The right vibrations, frequencies and intention can produce amazing effects on the physical level (cells, muscles, organs), subtle level (shifting negative thinking patterns) and causal level (creation of positive changes).
Scientific studies have shown that stress hormones become lower when slow tempo relaxation music is used during a medical procedure, if Gregorian chants, meditation or classical music are played as this can change our brain waves into the relaxed alpha and theta states. Even after listening to this music for twenty minutes, our immunoglobin levels in our blood are significantly increased. Certain types of music have been known to lower our heart rate and blood pressure. Every part of our body is affected by sound on a cellular level. People worldwide including Sufis, Hindus, Native Americans, African Tribesmen and Monastery Monks have long relied on sound to heal.
Description of a sound therapy session:
A sound healing therapy usually starts by creating a sacred space through smudging and meditation and setting an intention for the session. To relax and let go the day's stresses, we'll do the Ten Mindful Movements created by mindfulness teacher and Zen master Thich Nhat Hah - very gentle stretches to bring peace and calm to the mind and bring awareness to the present moment. These movements are based on Yoga and Tai Chi movements and are accessible to everyone. We'll tune and tone our chakras by humming, using vowels sounds and Bija mantras.
Then, all you have to do is lie down and let yourself be bathed in healing sounds. I use Tibetan singing bowls, Tingsha chimes, rainstick, singing, tuning forks and other instruments throughout the session to clear and balance the chakras and stimulate physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
Individual sound therapy sessions include elements of Bioenergy.
